Ministry to the Needy


"What you do to the least of
my brothers and sisters,
you do to me"

St. Joseph Church has a long tradition of caring for the large number of poor who regularly turn to us for assistance. We continue to do so even with an increaingly shrinking parish population and an increasing number of those needing assistance, both fueled by the devastation brought on our city by Hurricane Katrina.

Sisters Vera, Beth, Enid, Marie,and Joan, all Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, operate the Lantern Light Ministries at St. Joseph Church. From providing a hot cup of coffee in the morning to a healthy lunch on weekdays; maintaining a food bank for the elderly; providing assistance with securing birth records or identification papers lost in the floodwaters; providing assistance with finding long-term housing, medical care or prescription medication; providing toiletries needed for physical hygiene; or providing counsel regarding job-related legal matters, the Sisters are never idle.
